Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], May 31: Marengo CIMS Hospital announces its proactive participation in the global observance of World No Tobacco Day on May 31st, 2024. The hospital in aligning its initiatives with the theme designated by the World Health Organization (WHO),Protecting children from tobacco industry interference’, spreads awareness on the tobacco epidemic and preventable death and diseases tobacco causes. The 2024 theme of WNTD 2024 is focused on advocating for an end to the targeting of youth with harmful tobacco products.

In alignment with the WHO’s global campaign, Marengo CIMS Hospital commenced the day with educational TV Talk Shows featuring renowned cancer surgeons and experts in the field of tobacco control. These discussions delved into the various health risks associated with tobacco use especially in children, including its detrimental effects on respiratory health, overall well-being. It emphasized the importance of cessation programs and offered guidance on how individuals can quit smoking or chewing tobacco.

Dr Darshan Bhansali, Sr Surgeon for Head & Neck Cancer, Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “The ‘World No Tobacco Day’ serves as a crucial reminder of the urgent need to address this global epidemic. Tobacco not only damages our lungs and increases the risk of life-threatening diseases but also affects the health of those exposed to second-hand smoke. The harmful effect of consuming tobacco ranges from very high risk of oral cavity cancer, respiratory and other cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and reproductive issues to a weakened immune system. By understanding the gravity of these health risks and economic and social burden to society, and making a commitment to reduce tobacco use, we can pave the way for a healthier future, free from the shackles of tobacco addiction.”

Dr Ashok Patel, Senior Consultant, Onco-Surgery, Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “Awareness about the ill effects of tobacco is of paramount importance to motivate abstinence from tobacco in individuals addicted to it. Tobacco contains nicotine which releases dopamine in the brain, making it an addictive drug. Its consumption includes cigarette smoking, gutka, bidi, betel nut, etc. which lead to absorption of cancer-causing chemicals in the body.  Strong will, commitment & family support can help one quit smoking and consuming tobacco products. It has effect on the body even if you stopped consumption so one needs regular follow up.”

Dr Jayesh Patel, Senior Consultant – Onco-Surgery, Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “Tobacco use remains one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. It is increasingly concerning that many young people are losing their lives prematurely due to late-stage cancer diagnoses. This often occurs because early symptoms are neglected or misinterpreted, leading to delays in seeking medical attention. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment, and heightened awareness and education about cancer symptoms are essential to address this growing issue. By rallying behind WHO’s call to action, Marengo CIMS Hospital aims to foster a culture of health and well-being within our community, empowering individuals to take control of their health and embrace tobacco-free lifestyles.”

This initiative by Marengo CIMS Hospital aims to strengthen its commitment to raising awareness about the devastating effects of tobacco and promoting smoke-free communities. With the government taking measures to reduce the consumption of tobacco, members of the society too can create a positive shift towards healthier lifestyles and communities and safeguard the health of future generations.

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated every year as a reminder of the global epidemic. Research reveals that India is one of the largest consumers of tobacco products globally.
